Our undead obsession requires us to report on anything zombie related, so here’s a little info on Sega’s new entry into the awesome House of the Dead franchise.
As you can see by the box art, Overkill has something of a “pulp” feel to it, making it fit nicely here on Robot Panic. And according to the folks at developer Headstrong Games:
“We wanted to do something really different with The House of the Dead: OVERKILL. With SEGA we’ve been able to create a fresh look for the franchise. I think you’ll agree it’s like nothing you’ve seen before on Wii.”
“Paying homage to the pulp horror comics and films that inspired generations of gore fans, The House of the Dead: OVERKILL will expose gamers to a brand-new fleshy rollercoaster ride of revolting dismemberment. This is the hardcore Wii title you’ve been waiting for.”
Fleshy rollercoaster, eh? I suspect DJ Incompetent will have something to say about that bit of PR shortly.
Okay, rather than point to the link I’m just going to post the whole thing here. You can find the article at The Times Online
First came the joystick. Then came the motion-sensing Wii remote. Now get ready for another radical and rather unsettling leap in video games technology: thought control.
Satoru Iwata, the president and chief executive of Nintendo - which is expected to sell about 25million units of its successful Wii video games console this financial year - has no doubts about the next gaming boom. “As soon as we think something in our brain, it will appear within a video game,”he told The Times in an exclusive interview.
“You’ll probably need to wear some kind of hat or helmet or something.”As far-fetched as it sounds, Mr Iwata’s claim - which brings to mind the plot of Craig Thomas’s bestselling 1977 novel Firefox, about a mind-reading Soviet fighter aircraft - is already coming true: the world’s first thought-controlled game is expected to be launched by the Sydney company Emotiv by the end of this year.
Okay, I know we gave a bunch of reasons why we started Robot Panic, but screw all that. THIS is why this website exists! So that I can justify buying cool shit like Nerf Assault Rifles! That’s right, I’m twelve years old at heart and this stuff makes me giddy with joy. But what started as some innocent fun, ended up being simply crazy. But…that cool crazy. The kind of crazy that makes you happy to be alive. Alive with a gun that shoots whistling Nerf darts like automatic tracer fire over your back yard!
So I always wanted to hear the Black Mages (Nobuo Uematsu’s rock band) arrange this song for one of their CD’s and in lieu of that not happening on the latest release “Darkness and Starlight” I figured I’d do a quick mock-up of how I’d like to hear it. I had to make a pretty bad midi for some of the backing so the bulk of it is guitar driven rather than keyboard.
I mixed it up with some of the FMV’s from the game to give it a bit of context. Apologies on the dodgy finish but I was running short on time and the first attempt didn’t sync as well as planned…
Our good friend, Tyler Durden84 send us this review/article on the classic DC comic, The Killing Joke. This is a book any Batman and/or comic fan should own! Hell, anyone who enjoys a damn good story should own this! It’s Alan Moore at his finest and it’s a legendary book.
For those of you who have never read this classic, be warned. Tyler gives away a shit-ton of the plot and highlights of this story. So, consider this your spoiler warning.
I’m a sushi junkie. It’s the one food I get cravings for and I can’t get enough of it. Fortunately, and surprisingly, there are tons of great sushi joints all over the Twin Cities so I’m never lacking options. One of the best sushi bars in the area is - again surprisingly - located in the Mall of America. It’s called “Tiger Sushi”. According to their website:
Tiger Sushi is that hip, hot little Sushi Bar that’s shakin’ things up at Mall of America.
Tiger Sushi has a reputation for creating a bold fusion of cultures and flavors. You’ll find all the traditional sushi. But, you’ll also discover exotic creations ranging from Indonesian Tropical to Southwest chiles & lime. The atmosphere at Tiger Sushi is sophisticated and contemporary. The energy is lively and playful. The chefs are talented & highly entertaining! And, the Sushi? Well, the Sushi is legendary.
And yeah, that’s about right. What I love most about Tiger Sushi are the crazy creations they serve up. On any given day I’ll find something that I’ve never even heard of waiting for me. But to be honest, who the hell wants to go to the Mall of America? The place is a hell-hole packed to the gills with jackass shoppers and it takes forever to get anywhere. Thus, my trips to Tiger Sushi have become few and far between. Luckily for me, I work for a company that obviously shares my sushi passion as Tiger Sushi now comes to me once a week.
Every Tuesday, Chef JR from Tiger Sushi opens up shop in my cafeteria, serving up classics, new creations, and special orders. Today I went with something called “JR’s Crazy Roll”.
Continuing my musical contributions to the site I present to you all my first remix of a Video-Game theme.
So I’d been playing around with a Macbook Pro I was trialling for work for just over a week now and realised how insanely cool the Garageband app is for creating backing tracks etc. I’d had a few requests recently to record a version of this track (Simon’s Theme - from Super Castlevania 4) so I figured now was a good time to have a play and learn how to use the laptop keyboard to record…
I added some drums and guitars on top and I think it turned out pretty decent!
When we visited with the Gamers with Jobs crew a week ago, Shawn Andrich called me out on being “closet”. The reference for this (lest we all get a bit confused) was that I was truly itching to go with them to GenCon 2008 and that deep down inside, I was one of those gamers. You know, the kind that plays Magic the Gathering style CCG’s and secretly creates D&D campaigns when nobody is looking.
