2005 Reader's/Listener's Choices

Instead of just telling you what our favorite games of 2005 were, we asked listeners of Team Fremont Live to send in their choices, with a chance to win a Generation Nex Messiah. Listed below are a handful of the letters we received. Be sure to listen to our Game of the Year episode of Team Fremont Live to find out who won. Then, check out the forums thread to get in on the conversation.

Hello TFL crew,

I am writing in with my own personal Top 6 games of 2005 like you guys
asked on your latest podcast. So here goes:

6: WWE Smackdown vs. RAW 2006
The Smackdown games were starting to get stale on me for a couple of
years, but 2006 gave the franchise new life. The online actually has a
decent amount of gameplay modes supported. The story mode is actually
worth playing through. The in-game engine has some welcomed changes to it that made the gameplay the best ever for the series. Finally, there is lots of new faces in the roster to make the game feel up to date.

5: Jade Empire
Score another one with Bioware. This Chinese-themed RPG had me hooked
right from the start, and I am thrilled they went with a new battle engine instead of recycling the one from KotoR.

4: Lumines
I have never been so addicted to a puzzle game since The New Tetris on
N64. I loved how the music changed rhythms how I played too. I have still yet to play Meteos, but this is by far the best puzzle game in years.

3: Guitar Hero
I haven't been into music/rhythm games before, but Guitar Hero changed all that. I was an instant addict, I even got all my family hooked on it when I got all of us playing on Thanksgiving. The rock-focused music list also helped me make this my #3 overall pick

2: Burnout Revenge
I am a sucker for big crashes. Takedown was awesome last year as it
completely revamped the Burnout franchise. Revenge just adds more to the experience with Traffic Checking, loads of alternate paths, a more
in-depth World Tour mode, and finally a more user-friendly online module.

1: Indigo Prophecy
I love adventure games, and Indigo Prophecy is one of the best ones I have ever played. Its unique plot grabbed my attention through and through, and the unique gameplay engine didn't make the game feel boring or repetitive anytime at all with my experience with the game. I was always on the edge of my seat in this one as it threw in a lot of 'wtf' moments at me with the sci-fi plot. This is one buried treasure that I will always cherish and by far the best of 2005.

Hope you guys liked my list, keep up the awesome podcasts!

-Dale

OK. I could have listed a bunch of cool games that came out this year and said a little bit about each one but I'm just going to stick with one game. What game is that? Resident Evil 4.

Resident Evil 4 is the best game of 2005. Resident Evil 4 took what many to be a stale and dying franchise and completely change it. Instead of having pretty pre-rendered graphics you got detailed 3D environments. Instead of a clunky control set up that many people hated and drove away people from the series Capcom gave us an easy to control Leon with an always-over-the-shoulder camera angel and a button for quick turns then the action got too hot. The game also had action. Instead of mindless zombies stumbling about and moaning you got towns people who would run after you, would dodge attacks, would try to ambush you. These bad guys actually thought and that added a lot to the game. Resident Evil 4 also had cut scenes that really did put you on the edge of your seat because you never knew when the action button would pop up on screen and you'd have to quickly press it to avoid being killed in a cut scene. There was also all of the deaths in the game. Who didn't let the chainsaw guy come up to you so you
could see yourself get decapitated? Probably some wimps you didn't want to die.

This year had some really great games come out..like God of War, Mario Kart DS and We <3 Katamari, but none of those games did a complete 180 on a series that was in need of it.

Hey guys its me Lucas and I just wanted to enter the contest and tell you my top 5 games of the year.1. Resident Evil 4: I picked this game because it took the series in atotally new direction. The gameplay was great and I was actually scaredplaying the game.2. Indigo Prophecy: This is the surprise pick on my list. The game is just totally different, the story was great and really involves you. The game, one part walking around, one part using things with the right analog stick, and one part Simon says. The parts where you have to do physical game you have to tap two buttons back and forth and it made my thumbs want to weather away and die.3.God of War: This action game really involves in in a roman epic story. The action is fast and gory and the puzzles don't make you groan when you have to do them. The combos never make you feel like your thumbs are going to break and are great.4. The Warriors: This game brings back the beat em' up and is very quick. The stealing mini games are great and even just running feels really cool. The combat is brutal and quick, there are many combos and the co-op is great. I know this because I actually dragged one of my friends over to my house and play it. It was really good. The only problem is targeting sometimes and the camera in co-op.5. King Kong: This game is great. There is no OSD (On Screen Display) and not a lot of ammo for the guns, you have to use spears or bone chunks a lot. But Kong is a little slow and not as fun to control as Jack. It is also very short so give this one a rental.P.S. I would have some DS games on here but I am not getting a DS untilchristmas.

1. Mario Kart DS because I'm a Mario Kart lover.
2. Half-Life 2 because I don't have to say why.
3. Burnout Revenge because this is so fun to play
until Full Auto comes out which will be better.
4. RE4 because capcom desided to do something
different.
5. The Atari Flashback 2, not really a game but more
like 40 games in one system, thought I would get it
because I got it for $10, thought that was a steal.

And yes if you remember the letter to Billy the guy, I'm the same one who wrote that. Thought I would say that, maybe that will help here, eventhough I have no idea how that would help but ok.

Maybe for your next contest, you should give the play-yan that nintendo doesn't want to release it in the US for some reason, at lease I havn't heard anything about it in a long time.
