Nintendo DS: Web Browser Hands On
I stumbled upon this over in quite corner for old people in the Nintendo Booth. They call that the Touch Generation these days and while I think that sounds both kinky and stupid, I'll move on.The browser, for those not in the know, is a modified Opera Browser and while a bit clunky, it does the job.
The coolest feature that I found was the ability to write the name of the URL that you wish to go to. The URL screen has two boxes where you write letters in. Very easy to use and intuitive. Way better than what the PSP currently has, for those that use the Sony handheld browser.
Easy to navigate with a simple picture based menu bar on the bottom, the system was easy to use once you found your way around. That took a little time as the screen seemed very cluttered to me. I complain a ton about the PSP browser, but I do appreciate the way they keep the menu screen in the background until you need it. Screen real estate is a commodity on handhelds and why you'd want to waste in on menus is beyond me.
The DS uses two screens to display the web pages, and while that seems like a lot, sites still have to be scrunched. Pictures and text loaded up very quickly and with minimal compression. Pictures looked a bit less than beautiful but nothing to complain about. I will say, however, that the PSP screen does a better job of displaying sites from a beauty standpoint. However, the length of the DS screen is much better than the PSP's. I assume that once web masters start developing DS versions of their sites, it'll be a nice system to use.
Video was not supported, at least in the version that I tried and neither was Flash. That may change before it gets to our shores. Until then, while it has some current flaws, the DS Opera browser is showing some good signs.

We managed to talk about Boom Blox and R-Type Command, however. You can check it all out on this week's Team Fremont Live.
